Three Take Aways From Building a Community From Scratch

The Power Of Experimentation and Of Being Curious

In 2016, I moved from New York to Paris. A new city meant starting from scratch. I had no "real" job and had just decided to pursue programming instead of a career in law. Everything felt like chaos.

I sought out communities to meet like-minded people and create opportunities for myself. What better way than joining a meetup group? I thought.

It turned out meetups weren't as popular in Paris compared to New York. I could not find anything related to legal tech at the time. "If I can't find what I want, I'll start my own!"

I was quickly amazed by how big and fast the community grew—over 350 members in just three months! This growth created numerous opportunities for me and others, it was great to witness and so energising.

No matter where you are in your journey—new in town, starting a new business, or making a career change—launching a Meetup group can help you:

1. Create Your Own Reality

Discontentment can be a powerful motivator. If you're not satisfied with something in your life, you have the power to create your own change. Meetups are very easy to start; with just a few clicks, my group was created. And today, everything is online, which saves you time finding places to host...

2. Test Your Ideas Faster

With the right audience, you can test your ideas more efficiently. I saw many people pitching their ideas and gathering feedback at meetups. As the owner and organizer, it’s even easier to connect with members and speakers to refine your concepts.

3. Boost Your Network and Opportunities

People often attend meetups to unwind, network with like-minded individuals, and build opportunities. Having your own meetup will accelerate this process. Life sometimes forces you to be creative, and starting a Meetup is one effective way to do it!

Meetups transformed my journey from feeling lost and chaotic, to creating a supportive community where I met amazing people. If you're in a similar place, consider starting your own meetup. It might just be the catalyst you need for success!
