What A Ten Years Old Journal Has to Say on Authenticity And Writing

During the pandemic, my mother undertook a major cleaning of the house. She found my old journals, including the first one I ever started at age 10, titled: “My fears, my shames, my joys, and my jokes”.

What I found inside was so authentic and free! It reminded me of two essential things I had lost over the years, that are still so relevant today in my day to day:

Nurture an Authentic Voice

Reading through this journal transported me back to how I felt 20 years ago. I remember thinking, "Wow, I am writing straight from the heart, without a filter—I am so genuine and free!"

I wrote exactly what I was feeling and thinking. I wasn’t trying to be smart or impressive; I was simply being me, creating my authentic voice. This authenticity is what makes us unique, genuine, and powerful. It’s not just about self-expression; it’s about forging our own identity and conveying reliability and quality to others.

The Healing Power of Writing

Writing has long been known for its healing powers. Revisiting my journal reminded me of this truth. Why?

I could sense that I had poured out every little thought in my mind, as if it was a necessity to free myself and move forward. Writing is a way to cleanse our system: to let out the junk, remember some jokes, crystallize important moments, express our deepest fears without judgment, and reflect on ourselves.

Nurturing an authentic voice and letting ourselves heal through writing are not just tools for better writing; they are pathways to understanding ourselves and connecting with the world in a more profound and meaningful way.

So, if you haven’t already, pick up a pen and start journaling. Embrace your genuine voice and experience the transformative power of writing. You never know what forgotten wisdom and healing you might uncover within yourself.
